If you have been looking at buying an LCD flat screen tv, no doubt you have read about the 120Hz models. You are probably wondering if the 120Hz models are worth the extra cost. The value of the 120hz feature has been widely debated in recent months. There are a number of things to consider before making your decision.

In the early days of the LCD vs Plasma tv wars, one of the biggest drawbacks to purchasing an LCD tv was that they were prone to motion blur and a somewhat choppy picture, especially in times when there was a lot of fast action such as sports or in movie scenes such as car chases. Although there has been a great deal of improvement over the years in the tvs ability to handle fast motion, LCD is still battling the stigma of not having as smooth of a picture as plasmas.

Enter the 120Hz tv. As a direct response, LCD manufacturers have incorporated 120Hz tvs into their newest tv models. These tvs have refresh rates that are twice as fast as the "standard" 60Hz models.

Those who are supporters of the 120Hz technology claim that the picture is noticeably smoother with crystal clear clarity, especially during fast action scenes or sports. Another benefit is the ability to produce an almost 3D-like picture.

On the other hand, others say that they can't notice a difference when comparing side to side with the "standard" 60Hz models. They feel that the 120Hz models are simply marketing gimmicks to sell higher priced tv.

So who is right? As usual there is a middle ground. Put simply, a 120Hz tv will take a standard 60Hz signal and simply replicate it twice which by itself does little to enhance the picture quality. The real difference is made when applying a video processing feature for motion enhancement. Each company has there own name for this process. For example, Samsung's feature is called AMP for Auto Motion Plus. This feature takes the screen and interpolates the image to provide a smoother picture to reduce judder.

Does the motion enhancement provide a more satisfactory picture? Again this is open to debate. Motion enhancement at its best provides a noticeably smoother, stable picture, free of jutter, motion blur and ghosting. Some describe gaming in 120Hz as making a 30 frames per second game look like a 60 frames per second game, while others are mesmerized by the ability to make sports and movies look live and 3D-like.

At its worst motion enhancement, especially during fast motion can introduce split second glitches in the picture called artifacts which can obviously be distracting. Others feel that while documentary type shows like Planet Earth can provide stunning stable live action shots, that motion enhancement takes away from the cinematic feel of movies by providing an almost too realistic, live tv or soap opera feel instead of a cinematic experience.

It is important to point out that motion enhancement can be turned on or off, so if you prefer to watch a movie without the motion enhancement you can simply turn it off.

For the time being the choice to go with a 120Hz LCD flat screen tv is purely one of personal choice and budget. Keep in mind that this is a very new technology and as with all new technologies there are still some things that need to be perfected. There is little debate that 120Hz is the wave of the future and that technology will only improve over time. If price is not of primary concern or if you can spare the extra dollars in an attempt to future proof your tv purchase then it would seem to make perfect sense to go with the additional features and benefits that a 120Hz LCD flat screen tv can offer. If price is a primary factor and you are working on a limited budget then one of the standard models would be a fine choice until the 120Hz models are perfected.

I recently had the opportunity to test out the "soon to be" released, Intermec CK3 unit. From what I heard around the horn, this unit would be replacing the CK30 and possibly even the CK31 series units. I, like many of you, have had one major concern with the CK series over the past two years and that is the battery life of the CK's.

As many of you have heard from your customers, the CK31 just wouldn't get a "full shift" out of its battery pack even when the unit was fully optimized. To many customers this was a major setback as they saw this as a waste of having to change out battery packs during an eight hour shift.

This being my primary concern, the first thing I wanted to know about the CK3 was will the battery pack make it through a full 8 hour shift. So I put the demo through a series of tests to find out.

The first test I performed was where I pretty much turned on every thing I possibly could on the CK3 demo and left all items running throughout the day while also performing over 500 scans. I had the backlight on, the radio constantly connected, programs going, etc. With everything "booming", I was able to get 7 hours out of a fully charged battery pack...which in all honesty, is pretty dang good seeing that the unit was being used to its capacity.

The next day I performed a similar test but this time I optimized the unit a bit. I did keep the radio connected throughout the day and still performed over 500 scans. I only had the backlight on when the unit was being utilized and cut down on the number of programs being utilized. This being done, I was able to get 8.5 hours out of the battery pack before I left for the day. When I turned the unit off, it still had about 1/4 of battery life left as well.

To sum it all up, the CK3 will get a full shift (8 hours +) out of its battery pack which I think will relieve many of you. On a side note, I was also informed that Intermec will be offering an extended capacity battery pack as well and just to clarify, my testing was done with a standard battery pack.

The average United States citizen is already maxed out in his or her budget. Credit cards are maxed out to their limits. They are overpaying for their houses. Their gasoline prices have doubled in a few short years. The cost of health care continues to climb. And lastly, food prices have not only soared by 30% this year but is expected to increase due to the higher cost of fuel.

The floods in the mid-west, such as Iowa, etc has caused a strain on the supply of food as well.

So with all these necessary expenses going up, the average citizen will have to cut that which is not necessary. So when people start to make a choice between cable and internet, they will soon realize that they are better off cutting their cable television. On the internet, residents can get cable access for some channels, they can see old broadcasts on some of the websites. In fact, television stations will begin to stream all their channels online for free to tap into the internet audience.

Cable television will soon therefore become less and less necessary of a purchase.

The internet, however, will still remain one of those essential items in a household for studies, communications, and news. But the combination of internet and cable is that which is questioned here in this article.

The other areas where Americans will be forced to cut back is on entertainment like going to the movies, and even renting movies. Taking drives to the beach, etc will all be cut out of the daily life from the average American.

This will cause a boom in the computer repair industry as every citizen will indeed own one and utilize it.

It is about time that you should consider changing your CRT TV to a new high definition flat screen LCD television. It is definitely a good buy. LCD televisions are getting bigger as well as less costly.

The following are some of the things that you must look for when buying an LCD TV:

Choose a well-known brand. Sometimes the price you pay for the smaller size TV is the same as the bigger screened television. The important thing is to choose the smaller one that was manufactured by a reputable company since it will give you a higher quality picture and it will last longer.

Do not just buy the LCD TV just because all your other audio visual equipments are of the same brand. It does not mean that it is the best choice for you.

Some features such as DVD and game console connections are needed to be present in an LCD TV. Make sure that you have the right number of connections that you need so that you do not have to keep on unplugging and plugging connections.

Think about long term use of your LCD television in terms of how you will be using it. Buy ones which you will think will be useful in the future.

The credibility of the dealer must also be taken into consideration. Note their ability to answer whatever questions that you may have. Are you contented with the answers that they give you?

Choose an appropriate size of your LCD television. It should not be too large or too small. Another thing, do not buy an LCD TV which is smaller than your previous television.

Plan where you want to place your LCD TV. Select whether you want to mount it to the wall or retain the original position of your old television. Ask yourself, will it be in the way?

Do not hesitate to spend on necessary accessories. For example, speakers will increase the quality of sound and mounting your LCD TV will enable you to watch comfortably.

If you are conscious of your space, you might want to consider buying LCD TVs with features like a built-in hard disk recorder, DVD player, card reader, or Freeview. In this way, you will be able to view photos and videos. Although it may be quite expensive, it will help you save space.

Make the most of your home theater system. Surely, you want to watch your favourite movies and shows as if you were there.

Buying an LCD television is a smart investment, you will surely be relaxed.

The technology on flat screen TV has improved remarkably, giving a great advantage to the consumers. Not only does it provide fresh and exciting features, the prices also went down. This gives people a really cool entertainment experience at home. Now, everyone can avail of high quality flat screen televisions at an affordable price.

Did you know that you can mount your flat screen television on your wall? This is one of the cool features that you will really like with flat screen TVs. Since Plasma and LCD TVs have a slim and sleek design, they can easily be mounted on the wall. People usually mount their TVs on the wall but another great thing is that you can also mount it on your ceiling too. This is a very nice feature since you can actually watch television while lying in your bed. It is indeed very comfortable. In fact, you can see this on houses of some celebrities and they look really cool. But just a reminder, make sure that the television is placed properly for your safety.

There are many wall mounts that you can purchase in the market. They come in different sizes that would fit the sizes and models of flat screen televisions. Because of this, you can easily and safely mount your flat screen television on your wall, even if it is in a large size. Before you decide and buy a television and a wall mount, you should check first on a lot of factors. You need to get a lot of information about your television and the wall mount that you are going to purchase. Does the television contain all the features that you need? Will the television fit the wall mount? Can the wall mount handle the weight of the television? Try to answer these questions first to ensure that you are buying the right one.

The next thing to do once you have purchased your television and wall mount is to decide who will install the television. Are you capable to install it by yourself or will you be needing the help of a professional? To install the television, you need to have the right materials or tools, but if you don't have those, it is better to ask the help of an individual who is equipped with the installation tools. But if you have decided to install it by yourself, I advise that you make your own research. You can get tips on how to safely and properly install the television from the internet or magazines.

Now, you will enjoy a quality home entertainment once your flat screen television is properly mounted on your wall. It will really give you pleasure in viewing plus it is a real space saving in your room.

In traditional digital broadcasting, all contents are broadcasted to TV channels, regardless of whether or not the viewer is watching the TV. This basically wastes all the bandwidth that could otherwise be used for other services, such as high speed Internet and voice over IP. The new emerging technology uses complicated software to recognizes a viewer' s request to watch a particular TV program and then sends that program to the viewer. This action takes place transparently without viewer's knowledge.

In a cable network, groups of homes are connected on a common branch of coax cable. That is, groups of subscribers share access to the same downstream frequencies, and race for access to shared upstream frequencies. Where as, the traditional wireline networks are considered point to point, from a central office directly to a subscriber. Therefore, with sufficient switching capacity placed at the central office, infinite amount of content can be delivered to a single household. Switched Digital Video (SDV) is a new cable technology that attempts to answer this challenge. It was designed as a cost-effective method to expand program availability.

With SDV, as with IPTV, and unlike traditional digital broadcasting, programming terminates at the hub and does not go through the network unless requested. Instead, a receiver, such as set-top-box, signals upstream to request programming, and a hub-based controller receives the request and enables the stream into the network by means of a pool of allocated frequencies. In another word SDV allows operators to switch, rather than broadcast, some channels to individual service groups. A service group is typically made up of 250 or more subscribers (viewers) that use set-top-boxes to watch a TV program. Channels selected for a "switched tier" are delivered via a multicast stream only when a customer in a service group selects them for viewing.

The advantage of using SDV is that cable companies have more bandwidth available to convert into Internet channels during periods of high customer demand. The cable companies can also determine which channels are in more demand and develop localized advertising mechanism for those customers.

Though the modern microphones follow the same principle, they do it electronically. And thus, it captures pressure waves in the air and converts them into electric signals. Microphones are of different types, and they differ in their functioning too. Generally, there are five types of microphones commonly used for various purposes.

Condenser microphones: They are also called capacitors as the diaphragm acts as one plate of a capacitor that responds to the sound waves. The movement that happens changes the capacitance of the capacitor and it is amplified to create a signal. However, these microphones run on a small battery to provide voltage across the capacitor. These microphones produce high quality audio signal and are commonly used in studio recordings.

Dynamic microphones: These microphones work through electromagnetic induction. In this system, the sound wave creates a vibration in the diaphragm which makes the magnet or the coil to move and this movement creates a small current. However, these microphones are very hardy and resistant to moisture and are quite economical. And thus, they are widely used for stage performances.

Ribbon microphones: In these microphones, a thin metal ribbon is suspended in a magnetic field. And it is moved by the sound wave that changes the current flowing through it. Ribbon microphones usually do not require phantom power but there are some ribbon microphones that have pre-amplifiers and so need phantom power.

Carbon microphones: These are perhaps the oldest and the simplest microphones that were once used in telephones. Carbon microphones use carbon dust and they have a thin metal diaphragm on one side. As the diaphragm is hit by the sound waves, it compresses the carbon dust that changes its resistance. By running a current through the carbon, the changing resistance changes the amount of current flow and thus produces an electrical signal. Although they are quite robust they cannot reproduce high quality sound and have limited frequency. But these can be used as a type of amplifiers.

Crystal microphones: These microphones have a diaphragm attached to a crystal that crates a signal when the sound wavers hit the diaphragm. Basically, the crystal microphone uses the theory of piezoelectricity. However, they are commonly used with vacuum tube equipment like domestic tape recorders.

Other than these types of microphones, there is another type of microphone that is widely used these days. It is called wireless microphones. They are portable and have a versatile way of recording and broadcasting sound, without a cable connection.

The Sony Reader 700 is the much-anticipated next generation of the Sony lineup. It is actually a huge improvement over the 500 model, though not so much from the 505 model. Still, the touch screen capability might just make this the ebook reader that tops your list.

Most people are very curious about the touch screen on this device. Early reviews show that it is an excellent addition! It just seems so intuitive that an ebook reader should offer this functionality. Instead of having to deal with navigation buttons, you simply touch what you want. This should streamline your ebook reading experience tremendously.

The only problem here is that Sony has had to add the touch screen layer on top of their e-ink screen layer. This means that some of the contrast and "real book" feel that is noticeable on the PRS505 and Amazon Kindle are missing from this version. Still, that doesn't mean that books are totally unreadable, it is just a matter of getting used to it if you've enjoyed other screen types. It should be noted that some people are more in favor of the 505's screen, and choose that model over this one for that reason.

Another addition made to this reader is the backlit screen. This is a huge improvement for people who have been lamenting the fact that previous Sony Readers and the Amazon Kindle require a book light if you want to read them in the dark. That just isn't always possible for readers on the go! The Sony Reader PRS700 fixes that with their backlight.

There are some changes to things other than the screen as well. For example, you will enjoy a faster processor. This will make it easier for you to flip through the pages and navigate around the reader. Some users won't notice a huge difference, but if you are constantly using your reader it will be an improvement for you.

The internal memory of the device has been increased as well. This is a good thing if you don't like dealing with external SD cards. You can now store more items on a device that is the same size without buying anything extra. More books means more reading pleasure for you!

Other features you'd expect to be on the popular Sony Reader are present on this model as well. You can still highlight, mark pages, and easily navigate through your choices just like the previous models you've known and loved. The improvements on this model just might be enough to get you to step up to this version.

If you need a touch screen, back-light, faster processor, and more memory, the Sony Reader PRS700 is right for you. However, if screen contrast is your main concern you may want to stick with the PRS505. Either way, you can't go wrong when you get a device from the Sony Reader line.

Watch the video of the Sony Reader 700 review and see it in action. Only then can you decide if it's the right ebook reader for you!

Consumers are going crazy over the HD plasma TV models on the market but should you buy one too? They are well known of the amazing picture quality offered as well at size of the extra large screen that can be up to 70". A HD plasma TV can produce up to 8.6 billion colors and each of them with amazing precision. The viewing angle is 16 units wide and 9 unit high so you will be watching all your television programs and movies in luxury.

HD plasma TV models are also very durable. They have a long life with an estimated 60,000 hours of viewing. While they are expensive they may be well worth it if you watch plenty of TV and movies. They also cost less than LCD flat panel TV's when you compare the same size of screen. However it is important to know that this TV uses more electricity than a traditional TV set. On average you are looking at 700 watts of power to operate it.

A HD plasma TV is able to offer you these amazing features because of the thousands of display cells featured. They are used to link the x and y axis panels together. The cells have slots with neon and xenon gases in them. A HD plasma TV offers three primary colors - red, green, and blue that are made from the gases. The set up does not contain mercury so you don't have to worry about the effects from it.

You do have to be careful when moving this TV because the components are quite fragile. If you aren't careful with it the TV can suffer from a burn in effect that means the frame of a picture will linger on the screen longer than it should. If you decide that buying a HD plasma TV is right for you then make sure you get one that comes with a long term warranty just in case you experience any problems. It is also a good idea to conduct some research online so you get the right model of HD plasma TV for your money.

LCD TVs use the same technology found in everything from computer monitors to watches and clocks. It uses thousands of small pixels which sit behind the TV screen. Behind these pixels there's a fluorescent white backlight. When the light hits the pixels, an electric current determines how much light is fed into one of three colored chambers, these are red, green and blue. The amount of light will then determine which color shows up on your screen, and millions of these pixels make up the image that you see on your television screen.

Firstly an LCD screen has far more pixels per square inch than a standard TV (also known as a CRT television.) This means that the image displayed on your screen is far crisper and clearer, resulting in a sharper image. Secondly, due to the LCD screen being back-lit, there will be little or no flare when the sunlight bounces on the screen surface. Apart from the obvious benefits, this also makes LCD screens easier to watch and puts less stress on the eye.

Although LCD TV's aren't quite as versatile as plasma televisions, LCD's have an added advantage of being primarily flat in shape. This means that in addition to occupying less space in your home, a widescreen LCD TV can be viewed from a wide range. LCD televisions are also so compact that a 16 inch LCD flat-screen will offer the same degree of viewable screen as a 20 inch standard television.

Although this will not be your main reason for purchasing an LCD TV, it is worth noting that most modern LCD TVs are slim and stylish. They've also been designed with the ability to wall mount in mind. This gives most owners the option to hang their LCD TV on a wall, creating more space in the room. They also normally come with a widescreen aspect ratio which basically means you can watch movies and DVDs the way they were meant to be.

One of the flaws a plasma screen will have is a risk of 'image burn'. This mainly occurs when a paused or frozen frame remains on the screen too long and the result is a ghosting image emblazoned onto the screen. Fortunately LCD's do not suffer with this problem and you have no risk of this happening to your new TV!

Finally but by no means the least important of benefits is the LCD's economics. As a rule, LCD TV's use up to 60% less power to run than both standard CRT and Plasma screen TV's! What more could you want than a crystal clear image, a clean and bright viewing area, great picture quality and even a lower energy bill in addition! Subscribers to satellite TV have already been able to enjoy an impressive number of channels broadcast in HD. It was recently announced that a Satellite TV company has reached an agreement that will allow them to offer even more high definition channels in 15 markets. This new service was made possible through an agreement that was reached with LIN TV. A television provider is not able to offer a local channel without an agreement with the station owner, by law. The agreement with LIN TV has made it possible for the provider to broadcast the station's signals, providing even more advantages for subscribers.

In addition, this satellite TV provider has also launched a new satellite that will become operational in the fall and will make it possible for more national as well as local high-definition channels to be broadcast. Not only will Satellite be able to offer more HD channels in existing local markets but also to roll out additional local channels in the coming months as well.

The satellite was initially launched in March and while it had been hinted at that the satellite was not expected to become operational until September, there have been recent reports that have indicated that the satellite might become operational a bit sooner than originally expected. There have been some reports which have indicated that the satellite could become operational as soon as mid-August.

If that is the case, it would mean that Satellite would be able to expand its existing high-definition lineup much sooner than expected. Currently Satellite is able to offer 95 national high-definition channels. Once the new satellite becomes operational, Satellite will be able to expand that line-up to more than 100 channels. Ultimately, this satellite provider will obtain the capacity to provide as many as 150 national HD channels as a result of the new satellite.

To date the provider has kept quiet on exactly which new channels will be added to their lineup. There has been some speculation that some of the new high-def networks could include favorites like Fox News, AMC, ABC Family and WGN.

One of the reasons that there has been so much speculation that the new satellite is already ahead of schedule is the fact that Boeing has reported they were ready to hand the in-orbit delivery over to the company ahead of schedule. This would seem to indicate that the satellite is nearing the last phase before it becomes completely operational. It could also mean that the company is ready to begin testing satellite signals in preparation for turning on the satellite.

Boeing stated that the hand-over actually occurred some eight days ahead of schedule. This would certainly be good news in terms of a possible early launch of the satellite.

Subscribers have also received notice that testing of satellite signals for local receivers has already begun. The next few weeks should shed more light on this evolving advancement and possibly make it available for subscribers to begin viewing more high definition channels.

3D is an exciting new feature for the home theater market. For some dramatic movies or soap operas, 3D might seem out of place. But for sports, action movies, etc. 3D makes as much difference as color vs. black and white. And the new 3D technology is superior to the 3D system that has been used in theaters.

The commercial successes of recent 3D films like "Beowulf", "Meet the Robinsons", and "Journey to the Center of the Earth", is sparking interest with the movie studios to produce more 3D content material. Disney, Universal, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Thomson and IMAX are currently exploring the potential 3D HDTV market. Disney said it would begin making all its computer-animated films in 3D. According to Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, all of the major studios have 3D projects under way. There will be over 2,500 theatre screens equipped with the Digital 3D technology by the end of 2009. All of this content will be available to the home theater market. The Big Question: will the 3D market be pervasive enough for major networks, especially the sports subset, to broadcast in 3D?

3D Distribution

It will likely be the satellite TV companies like DirecTV and Dish Network that distribute 3D versions of HDTV programming first. 3D movies should take about the same bandwidth as other 120 fps (frame per second) high def movies. The satellite companies have enough broadcast bandwidth to support niche markets (the cable companies do not), and for now, 3D HDTV is a niche market.

"Satellite's going to be constrained not so much by how many channels they can carry than by how many they can get," said Bob Scherman, Satellite Business News.

By 2010, it is projected that 60% of TV receivers in the United States will use a satellite signal, up from 15% in 2002.

3D HDTV Home Theater Systems

Because of the high frame rate for 3D, and the need for synchronization, LCD screens are generally incompatible with advanced 3D. However, prototypes by Phillips have been demonstrated at upwards of $20,000, and this technology does not require glasses. The Phillips technology is optically very complicated. Unlike electronics, it cannot be assumed that the price will come down.

By the end of this year (2008), more than one million 3D ready DLP HDTVs, manufactured by Mitsubishi and Samsung, will have been sold in the U.S. The technology functions by supplying a 60 Hz signal to each eye (equivalent to 120 Hz total). These sets can display standard HDTV, and are compatible with 3D material. Some source material is available for download, and Blu-Ray 3D discs are becoming available. "Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" was the first 3D Blu-ray Disc.

The Glasses: Field Sequential 3D

Special glasses are used with the DLP 3D system. The system is called "Field Sequential 3D" or HQFS (High Quality Field Sequential). This technology uses electronic shutter glasses instead of red-blue lenses we are used to at the movies. The effect is definitely superior. Our eyes see a slightly offset view of a scene. The two slightly different views are combined by the brain to result in our ability to see in 3D. Field Sequential 3D simulates this experience with shutter glasses. The shutter is not mechanical, but instead an LCD filter, that blocks vision when the opposite eye's view is shown.

A HDTV set with 120 Hz refresh rate is recommended for 3D viewing. The 3D system uses half of the total information for each eye. If we use a TV with a total of 60 Hz refresh rate, it would supply only 30 Hz to each eye, and that refresh rate would be visible (flicker).

When designing a 3D system with previous 3D techniques, we have the choice of either sending two equal bandwidth signals with full information, effectively doubling the signal bandwidth, or sending the signal such that either the horizontal or vertical resolution is halved, one half for each eye. Doubling the bandwidth would be a problem since the HDTV signal bandwidth capacity is already at a premium. Using the same bandwidth as non-3D material means that we can utilize the technology with current HDMI or DVI interfaces.

The alternative to cut resolution is unattractive, since we have worked to so hard to increase our system to high definition, we don't want to compromise. By using alternate frames for each eye, we see a high definition signal without flicker.

Two sets of wireless shutter glasses, with a control transmitter (InfraRed (IR), the same technology as the TV's remote control) cost about $100.

"Hang-Ups" Holding up DLP

Many consumers have a fascination with the idea of hanging their new big screen HDTV on the wall, like a painting. It's worth noting that most LCD and Plasma big screen TVs never actually get mounted on the wall. It is a significant challenge to mount something that weighs 60-150 pounds on the wall, and once installed, it's a continuing challenge for maintenance (for example, a 50 inch Pioneer PDP-5070HD weighs 128 pounds).

According to the NPD Group, only 13 percent of current LCD TV owners and 25 percent of plasma TV owners have their set mounted on the wall.

DLP is very popular among those who want larger high picture quality screens at affordable prices. For the money, DLP easily provides the highest quality-size value. An LCD of the same size and price will not have the picture quality of a DLP. DLP is also available in larger screen sizes then LCD televisions.

However, a DLP rear projection TV is a few inches thicker than an LCD or Plasma screen. LCD screens are usually 7-10 inches thick; DLP sets are usually 12-17 inches thick. Because of the fascination with mounting their sets on the wall, this difference of a few inches becomes the deciding factor for many consumers' purchase decisions.

Texas Instruments, who manufactures the DLP chips in a foundry in South Korea, sees renewed potential for the technology, which uses tiny mirrors on a semiconductor. The new LED Light Engine call "Phlatlight" (manufactured by Luminus) replaces the arc lamp and color wheel design of previous DLP HDTVs. Samsung has had their own proprietary LED lamp system for a couple of years. The LED Light Engine will need to be replaced infrequently (unlike the cold-cathode fluorescent lamps that had to be replaced every few years).

DLP HDTVs with an LED engine are more energy efficient than comparably sized flat panel displays, and the lack of a moving color wheel in the design means they perform with less noise. The DLP chip is faster than any other HDTV technology, with the mirrors switching on and off more than 15,000 times per second to deliver a picture without blur for fast moving images such as sports.

DLP HDTV sets are a very smart choice for most people, but be selective. Many of the HDTV sets in stores still do not have important technology, such as LED backlights.

The compatibility of the TV for 3D can be verified by looking for an input on the back of unit, marked "3D Ready".

Home Theater Personal Computer (HTPC)

An important trend in the home theater is the integration of the personal computer (PC) with the home theater. Integrating a PC into your home entertainment center has many advantages in addition to enabling 3D video. Downloading movies is one of the advantages. The HTPC should have a graphics card with a DVI connector (Digital Video Interface). Both XP and Vista will support Microsoft's product for the home theater.

HDTV and 3D video is computation intensive, meaning a high-performance computer. For 720p videos, a dual core microprocessor is needed; 1080p or 1080i videos require a quad core microprocessor for smooth playback. Video files are very large (!), so the larger the hard-drive, the better.

DirectX 9 graphics drivers (software) need to be installed, if they are not already present. To find your current version, Click "START" and then "RUN" from your Windows desktop. Type "dxdiag" in the "Run" box.

Software is available from several different vendors; "StereoPlayer" (Version 1.3.4) from 3DTV.at is available. Purchase of StereoPlayer is about $50. While you are at 3DTV.AT also download the GPL MPEG-1/2 Decoder. Alternatives to Stereoplayer include "Dynamic Digital Depth" (ddd.com), "Stereoscopic Player" and "Tridef Visualizer".

Summary

3D technology has become a major force in Hollywood. It is probable that this trend will repeat in the home theater. CRT and DLP work best with 3D technology, though plasma systems are also available. DLP offers the better value for big screens using HDTV, not just 3D HDTV.
